One of the changes in 1972, after wife Priscilla left their marriage, was a
move back into his empty Hillcrest home in Los Angeles, in early March. Was
it any surprise that several of the songs done a few weeks later, at RCA's
Studio C in nearby Hollywood, were downcast or bluesy?
When MGM's cameras moved in for a one-day "mock" session sequence, Elvis and
band rocked it up with "Burning Love" and "Johnny B. Goode," but also showed
Presley's true mood with selections like "For The Good Times," "Always On My
Mind" and "Separate Ways."
Now, for the very first time, hear the complete, unedited March 30, 1972 "mock"
session in superb STEREO!

(Rainbow Records RR-19770524-2)
Soon to be released is the latest production from “Rainbow Records”. This
release will feature the complete performance of Elvis Presley in Augusta,
Maine - recorded May 24, 1977.
The producers have been able to locate the original audience-recorded tape.
Using 24bit audio transfer they achieved an optimum sound of this recording.
We think that with our 6th release we can bring you the best sounding disc
so far.
Although Elvis was clearly not in the best shape regarding his physical
appearance his voice was strong and powerful as always. “Never Been To
Spain” which unfortunately was only intoned or the performance of “You Gave
Me A Mountain”, “Little Sister” and “My Way” prove that his spirit and
feeling for many of his songs was still there.
The funny moment when Felton Jarvis was on stage during “If You Love Me” is
pictured in the 20-pages booklet which is loaded with shots from the actual
concert (we actually had a total of 150 great photos to choose from). We
also included a scan of the ticket stub, a newspaper announcement for the
concert and 2 different show reviews. All in all you will get a nearly
perfect overview of what Elvis was able to deliver to his audience on May
24th, 1977.
For Augusta the “Elvis Presley Show” was a once in a lifetime experience. We
hope that this CD will be – at least - a proof that “Elvis 77” was still
pleasing his audiences.

Legendary artist and illustrator of the cult book "Rock Dreams" Guy
Peellaert (Belgium) has passed away at the age of 74.
Peellaert is probably best known for his pop art paintings that graced covers of the Rolling Stoned and David Bowie. One of his favorite singers was Elvis, and it's probably no surprise that John Lennon had a Peellaert painting of him and Elvis framed as the centerpiece of his home in New York.
Peellaerts work now hangs in countless cafes, bars and restaurants all over the world.

Gift of technology lets the King and McBride share 'Blue Christmas'
Martina McBride has vintage Priscilla Presley hair and eyelashes that could
double as feather dusters as part of her visit to 1968 and onstage with
Elvis Presley.
"It was very specific hair and makeup with the pale lips, long fake
eyelashes and pale skin tones," says McBride, who co-stars with Elvis in a
duet of "Blue Christmas" as part of a new Elvis "Duets" album.
In her duet, she appears to walk onto the set of one of Elvis' most famous
performances, his " '68 Comeback Special." McBride takes a seat beside Elvis,
exchanges glances with him and picks up at the second verse of "Blue
Christmas." It is the song Elvis described as his favorite of the Christmas
songs he recorded, and it is the only Elvis Christmas song with video
accompanying it.
McBride, the four-time female country music vocalist of the year, will be in
Memphis Friday for her first
tour of Graceland and to help flip the switch when Graceland turns on its
Christmas lights, including the blue lights that became as familiar each
Christmas as Santa and the manger scene on the Presley family's sweeping
lawn.
"It was one of my dad's favorite songs growing up," says McBride, 42, who
was 2 when Elvis performed "Blue Christmas" in the " '68 Comeback Special."
Offered the chance to be part of the "Duets" album, McBride says she chose
the song because of her father's love of it and because no one else had yet
chosen it.
Other duets on the Sony BMG album include Carrie Underwood on "I'll Be Home
For Christmas," LeAnn Rimes on "Here Comes Santa Claus," Sara Evans on "Silent
Night," Gretchen Wilson on "Merry Christmas Baby," Anne Murray on "Silver
Bells," Amy Grant on "White Christmas," Karen Fairchild and Kimberly
Schlapman of Little Big Town on "O Little Town," and Wynonna Judd on "Santa
Claus Is Back in Town."
A traditional country artist, McBride, born in Sharon, Kan., began singing
with her father's band at age 7, covering traditional hits like "Heartaches
By the Number," "Satin Sheets" and "I'll Be There." By 1992, she had gained
enough notice to be chosen as the opening act on a Garth Brooks tour. In
2004, she won the first of four female vocalist of the year awards from the
Country Music Association.
McBride, married to an audio engineer, has several video of the year awards
to her credit, but the Elvis duet was a tricky one that required a green
screen and a computerized rotoscoping technique similar to one in which
Celine Dion appeared with Elvis on an "American Idol" episode. The
difference is that Elvis moved into the future when he sang with Dion, but
McBride was transported to the past, says Graceland spokesman Kevin Kern.
In the video, McBride walks from the crowd into the frame behind Elvis' left
shoulder, then takes a seat beside Elvis, guitarist Scotty Moore, drummer
D.J. Fontana and the rest of the group staged to appear like an informal jam
session. That well-rehearsed performance was anything but informal, and the
video of the "Comeback Special' was an editing marvel in itself at the time.
But McBride's video with Elvis is a technological feat that makes anything
look possible on video. She said viewers shouldn't worry about being edited
into risqué situations, because, "It would take about 100 grand to create
the video, and it took about five or six hours for us to (shoot) it. We shot
different angles in different wide shots and medium shots. I had a mark. At
the end, they took all of my performances and edited them together."
McBride will join St. Jude Children's Research Hospital spokeswoman Marlo
Thomas and her brother, Tony Thomas, and several St. Jude patients, along
with artist Thomas Kinkade as part of the Friday lighting ceremony, which
begins at 6 p.m.
"I'm a huge Elvis fan," says McBride, who says the Elvis phenomenon may be
the biggest in music history. "I doubt that something like that will ever
happen again. We were in a much more innocent place then. He was very
talented and very beautiful, and there was a mystery there."
"It Is No Secret What God Can Do," is a gospel classic written by East Texan
Stuart Hamblen.
Hamblen, the son of an itinerant preacher, wrote hundreds of songs during
his lifetime, but his most enduring composition was the gospel classic
inspired by, of all people, John Wayne.
Hamblen was born in 1908 at Kellyville, west of Jefferson, but strayed from
his father's Methodist teachings when he became a western singing success
and a Hollywood star.
He started drinking, gambling and brawling -- a lifestyle befi tting his
frequent role as a bad guy in films with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Wild
Bill Elliott.
His wife Suzy frequently prayed for him and Hamblen experienced a religious
conversion at a 1949 Billy Graham crusade in Los Angeles. Hamblen stopped
drinking and even ran for president in 1952 as the Prohibition Party
candidate.
He encountered John Wayne, with whom he had appeared in "Flame of the
Barbary Coast," and Wayne asked him, "What's this I hear about you, Stuart?"
"Well, Duke," answered Hamblen. "I guess it's no secret what God can do."
"Sounds like a song to me," said Wayne.
The casual remark provided a creative spark for Hamblen. That night, sitting
alone at home, he began writing a song, but had trouble finding a beginning.
When a clock struck the hour, he wrote: "The chimes of time ring out the
news. Another day is done. Someone slipped and fell. Was that someone you?"
In 17 minutes, Hamblen had created, "It Is No Secret," a gospel classic
which has been translated into nearly every language in the world.
Following his success with "It Is No Secret," Hamblen wrote more than 225
other songs, including Remember Me" and "Open Up Your Heart and Let the
Sunshine In."
His songs were recorded by Elvis Presley, Eddy Arnold, Pat Boone, Johnny
Cash, Hank Snow and Ernest Tubb.
Hamblen was inducted as a charter member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall
of Fame in 1970, was honored in 1971 by the Academy of Country and Western
Music as radio broadcasting's first singing cowboy, was given a star on
Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame in 1976, and received a Golden Boot Award
in 1988 for his work in motion pictures.
Hamblen, who made his home at a ranch outside Los Angeles, died at the age
of 80 in 1989.
In August 2001, he was honored posthumously by the Texas Country Music Hall
of Fame in Carthage, Texas.
Appearing on stage to accept the award, his daughter said Hamblen was once
approached by a Christian fan who said her father didn't really write, "It
is No Secret," The fan insisted Hamblen "only held the pen."

releases from January 2009.

Elvis and Martina McBride spend a Blue Christmas together.
Martina McBride was just shy of 2 when Elvis Presley filmed his 1968
"comeback" TV special. This year, the country singer steps back in time 40
years to join the King of Rock 'n' Roll in a video for Blue Christmas.
The effect is similar to Celine Dion's American Idol duet with Presley on If
I Can Dream in 2007, but producer George Flanigen says the process used for
the illusion was entirely different.
"They took Elvis out of the '68 special and put him on the Idol stage," he
says. "We were taking Martina to the '68 special."
The posthumous collaboration also appears on Elvis Presley Christmas Duets,
a new album that pairs Presley with singers such as Carrie Underwood, Amy
Grant and Olivia Newton-John.
In the original footage - the only existing video of Elvis performing a
Christmas song - a leather-clad Presley appears with his band on a small
stage at the center of a studio audience. In the video, McBride walks out of
the audience and sits next to him.
"There's a spot between (guitarist) Scotty Moore and Elvis that's open, like
somebody should have been sitting there," says Flanigen. "We're like, 'We
could probably figure a way to put her with Elvis.'
"We scoured the footage and picked shots of Elvis throughout the whole
special to be able to put them together. There are shots where he and
Martina share the frame, where he looks over at her, where she looks back at
him and sings and smiles."
McBride filmed her parts in front of a green screen. "It took four weeks" to
piece together, Flanigen says.
The song version in this clip is the unplugged version, and is different
than the one on the cd.
Elvis is Dominic Greene’s henchman and Anatole Taubman has worked hard to
develop the character to set him apart from the Bond henchmen of the past.
“I love it on this picture, you have a certain format and you have it
written in the script but Marc is very open so you can develop the character
from there. He has a vision and the artists are invited to help round that
vision, we all have creative input.
I want to make Elvis as colorful, as edgy and as interesting as possible. I
suggested a wig with a monk cut and Marc agreed so you have the head of
Elvis, then the costume department adds another layer, then you meet the
makeup department and another layer goes on and you go back and forth
developing this character. It is a work in progress and on the first day of
filming, Elvis is created.”
On the character of Elvis, “Elvis is Dominic Greene’s better or worse half,
depending on the situation. The problem with Elvis is that he comes from a
rough background, he has always had to struggle for everything
materialistically. Greene, a wealthy influential man, took him under his
wing and suddenly Elvis wore all these great clothes.
He is a big fashionista, he loves clothes but there is always something
wrong with the look, something odd and strange—and that is a reflection of
his character. Elvis is the most loyal warrior that any boss could wish for
but he is not very bright, a bit of a dumbo and a bit clumsy.”

The next hardcover book from JAT Publishing will be Atlanta In Black And
White featuring photographs taken at the Omni on June 29, 1973 and April 30,
1975.
This book and the DVD Hot Shots And Cool Clips Volume4 will be released
simultaneously in the first quarter of 2009.
The Herbert Hoover Museum has come up with an exciting new holiday exhibit
that features 20 trees showcasing the life and career of Elvis Presley. "A
Very Elvis Christmas" opens on Saturday, Nov. 22.
There are trees that recall some of the places where Elvis lived and worked.
For example, there is a Hawaiian tree covered with ornaments of the
islands-leis, hibiscus and the like. And no one can forget Elvis' frequent
appearances in Las Vegas; the tree will feature dice, playing cards and
coins. The most important place in Elvis' life was his beloved Graceland
estate-and the tree standing in the rotunda will be decorated in the
likeness of a tree from Graceland.
There are trees decorated to represent songs that Elvis sang and recorded
during his career. The "Love Me Tender" tree is filled with hearts and other
signs of love. The "Teddy Bear" tree is filled with teddy bears! How about a
"Hound Dog" tree featuring bones, dog collars and fire hydrants among other
items? And, of course, there is a "Blue Christmas" tree covered with blue
lights and blue ornaments.
Elvis was more than a singer and selected, non-musical aspects of his life
will be included in the holiday exhibit. Not surprisingly, there is a tree
filled with items that recall his service in the U.S. Army. Several trees
are decorated to represent themes from movies that Elvis made. For example
there is a "Western" tree, a "Race Car" tree and a "Beach/Ocean" tree-all 3
recalling Elvis' appearances in various genre films of the 1950's and
1960's.
Fame visited Elvis early and often so several trees concentrate on his
achievements. There is a tree devoted to various kinds of Elvis
memorabilia-from mini album covers to collectable playing cards. Another
tree concentrates on his gold records and is covered with-gold colored
records! And since Elvis was known as the "King of Rock and Roll," there is
a regal tree featuring crowns and the colors of royalty.
These are just some of the themes and trees that are included in "A Very
Elvis Christmas." It is an exhibit that will bring back memories of holidays
past. In fact, it may encourage you to go up to the attic or down to the
basement to find your own old copy of an Elvis' Christmas album. And if you
can't find it, you can buy a new one. More than 50 years after the original
release, the album is still in stores-the top selling holiday album of all
time!
"A Very Elvis Christmas" opens at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum on
Nov. 22 and continues until Jan. 4. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving,
Christmas and New Year's Day. For more information call 319-643-5301 or
visit www.hoover.archives.gov.
Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential
Library and Museum are located in West Branch and are open daily from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Parking is limited so please allow extra time to find a parking
space.

One of the most remarkable books in 2008 is 'The Elvis Encyclopedia'.
Without any promotion, this book arrived in all silence in the stores, but
it contains a true treasure of Elvis info.
Like the titles says, it is an encyclopedia and it comes in handy if you are
looking for some extra info of every aspect in Elvis' life. Some items are
explained very basic, while others - like the word 'will' - is very detailed
with the complete text of Elvis' last will.
Without any doubt, this book is going to be one of the favourites on many
holiday wish lists...

Posted on the Y! Music Playlist Blog by Robert of the Radish is a
playlist of the biggest selling singles of all time in the United States.
The biggest selling single has sold almost twice as many as its closest
competition. In 1997, Elton John released a remake of his classic 1973 song
"Candle In The Wind" with new lyrics that paid homage to Diana, Princess of
Wales after her untimely death. This single sold over 11 million copies in
the United States. An incredible figure. Unfortunately, "Candle In The Wind"
is not available for streaming via Rhapsody at this time, so it is not
included in the final playlist here.
So what are the runners up to "Candle In The Wind 1997"? Well, only two have
broken the 6 million mark ("A Little Less Conversation" by Elvis Presley & "Here
Without You" by 3 Doors Down"), and only 12 have cracked the 4 million mark.
Please note that I am speaking only of sales in the USA. Look for future
blog posts to reveal top sellers in other countries and worldwide.
A "single" is a song recording that has been marketed for sale as a unit,
usually with a second track, or "b-side". For the most part singles also
appear on a full-length album and tend to be the track(s) a record company
feels have the best chance for massive sales and airplay.
1. A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Presley
2. Here Without You - 3 Doors Down
3. Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
4. Apologize - Timbaland
5. (Everything I Do) I Do It For You - Bryan Adams
6. Hey Jude - The Beatles*
7. Hound Dog / Don't Be Cruel - Elvis Presley

Elvis Unlimited has confirmed with Enrst Jørgensen that the upcoming FTD, I'll Remember You will be the midnight show from February 3, 1973 and not the dinner show. Elvis only sang I'll Remember You at the dinner show and not at the midnight show.
Therefore, the song is included as a bonus song on the new FTD release. Ernst tells us not only was Elvis in great spirits for this show but also that the sound quality is outstanding on this release.

The Polynesian Cultural Center celebrates the history of the "King of Rock
'n' Roll," Elvis Presley, with its new Aloha Elvis store. Just in time for
the holidays, visitors and fans will delight in a wide array of Elvis
memorabilia, toys, games, limited edition items, gadgets and unique
souvenirs to please every Elvis fan, young or old.
Hawai'i was a favorite destination for The King, and he was a frequent
visitor to the PCC. "Paradise, Hawaiian Style," notably recognized for its
theme song "Drums of the Islands," was filmed at the Center in 1965.
"We are thrilled to share Elvis' love for the Polynesian Cultural Center and
his legacy here in Hawai'i with our guests," said Susan Kunz, director of
retail stores at the PCC for Event Network. "The store not only offers great
Elvis merchandise, but guests also have the opportunity to learn
little-known facts about his historical presence in Hawai'i."
At Aloha Elvis, all products have a bit of rock 'n' roll flair. Top items
include the "Elvis in Hawaii" book, shoulder bag, and, of course, the Elvis
Beanie Baby. Guests will also find Elvis Presley-themed games—such as
Monopoly and checkers—pens, magnets, key chains, commemorative books, DVDs,
and limited edition collectible plates, records and plaques.
Throughout the store, upbeat songs such as "Rock-A-Hula Baby" and "Hawaiian
Sunset" play, getting shoppers humming and moving to the beat. Aspiring
Elvis look-alikes can even purchase a signature Elvis aloha shirt like the
one he wore in "Blue Hawaii".
The Aloha Elvis store, as well all of the PCC retail shops, are open to the
public and offer a wide selection of souvenirs and gifts for the whole
family. Shoppers can get their own piece of The King at the Aloha Elvis
store, open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Founded in 1963 as a non-profit organization, the PCC has entertained more
than 33 million visitors, while preserving and portraying the culture, arts,
and crafts of Polynesia to the rest of the world. In addition, the PCC has
provided financial assistance to 17,000 young people from over 70 different
countries while they attend Brigham Young University-Hawai'i. As a
non-profit organization, 100 percent of PCC's revenue is used for daily
operations and to support education.

Oration Criner (from left), guitar legend
James Burton, Mike Snider and David Dooley play together at the Rutherford
House where Burton donated guitars for the new music program Wednesday. (Greg
Pearson/The Times
Rock 'n' roll legend James Burton donated 15 acoustic guitars Wednesday
during what was called one of the greatest assemblies the Rutherford House
has ever had.
The guitars will help start a music program at the nonprofit residential
treatment center for youth, continuing its arts programming.
"About four or five months ago we opened our arts lab," said Eliot Knowles,
executive director of the Rutherford House. "Now we have a music program."
Arts teacher Micheal Snider approached the James Burton Foundation for the
instruments. The donation makes Rutherford House the first group home to
receive the guitars.
"Day in and day out, I see the creativity out of these (young) men," he said.
"Here's hoping that in the future, one of these men come back to present to
us more instruments."
The James Burton Foundation is funded by the James Burton International
Guitar Festival. The money from the event goes toward purchasing guitars and
providing music lessons for young musicians.
Since the foundation was formed in late 2005, about 1,800 guitars have been
given to schools in Caddo and Bossier parishes, said Janie Landry,
foundation and festival chairwoman.
Burton, who has played with musical icons such as Elvis Presley, said music
programs in schools are important.
"What I want to do is give back, work with kids and keep music in the
schools," Burton said. "It's great for your discipline. It's wonderful. I
couldn't deal without it in my life."
On Wednesday, Knowles introduced Burton to a crowd that hadn't heard of him
until that moment.
"Some of you might not have heard of James Burton but to me he's a legend,"
he said. "How many of you have heard of Elvis Presley?"
A majority of hands were raised.
"And Jerry Lee Lewis? "
More hands were raised.
"Well, James Burton has played with them and others," Knowles said.
The students were then treated to an impromptu jam session with Burton;
Oration Criner, a former employee who plays guitar; and David Dooley a local
musician who plays the violin.
"I can kinda end my career now," Criner said. "I know James Burton. He's a
legend. I've got to have a tape of that."
Dooley also enjoyed the jam session for the students.
"Playing with someone like that makes the music make sense," he said.

Perhaps surprisingly, given Ernst Jorgensen's recent message to many Elvis
clubs/sites, on the Elvis Australia site you can listen to a preview "For
The Good Times" from the the upcoming import release from the Madison label
entitled "Hillcrest Blues - Standing Room Only Tapes, Vol. 3".
This CD is volume 3 in the Madison "Standing Room Only" series, previeous
volumes were "A Greensboro Revolution" and "Red Hot In Richmond".

Roslyn Kind is Barbara Streisand's little sister. She began her career
right out of high school. She has performed on the Ed Sullivan show,
television, Broadway and Vegas. Here she mentions sharing the marquee with
Elvis.
"It was 1973 at the Hilton. I was a baby. Elvis Presley was in the main room
and on the side marquee it said "Introducing a new star to Las Vegas, Roslyn
Kind." We had just moved to Los Angeles then. We just drove across country
to move to L.A. on the 23rd of June and I opened in Vegas on the 26th.
I shared a bill with Louis Prima and Sam Butera and The Witnesses and when
Prima left I shared the bill with Bill Medley. That was my first time in Las
Vegas. I got great reviews there. It's been a long time since I've been.
I was there in '74. I did the Flamingo twice. A lot of politics were
involved at that time, but I was in the middle of signing a major deal and
it went kaplooie."

Reuters – Singer Aretha Franklin accepts the Vanguard Award at the 39th
Annual NAACP Image Awards at the Shrine …
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – She's already the Queen of Soul, but now Aretha
Franklin has been named the greatest singer of the rock era in a poll
conducted by Rolling Stone magazine.
Franklin, 66, came in ahead of Ray Charles at No. 2, Elvis Presley at No. 3,
Sam Cooke at No. 4 and John Lennon at No. 5, according to the magazine's
survey of 179 musicians, producers, Rolling Stone editors, and other
music-industry insiders.
The 100-strong list will be published on Friday, when Rolling Stone hits the
newsstands with four different covers.
The issue includes testimonials from musicians. R&B singer Mary J. Blige,
for example, writes that Franklin is "the reason why women want to sing."
Former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, who was No. 15 on the list,
describes Presley's voice as "confident, insinuating and taking no prisoners."
Besides Franklin, the only other living people in the top 10 were Bob Dylan
at No. 7 and Stevie Wonder at No. 9. Marvin Gaye was No. 6, Otis Redding No.
8, and James Brown No. 10.
Other notables included Paul McCartney at No. 11, one place ahead of his
idol, Little Richard; and Mick Jagger at No. 16, also one ahead of a key
influence, Tina Turner. Among the top 25, 50-year-old Michael Jackson was
the youngest, coming in at No. 25.
Voters included Metallica frontman James Hetfield, folk singers David Crosby
and Yusuf Islam, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, punk rock veteran
Iggy Pop and English pop star James Blunt. They each submitted their top 20
choices, and an accounting firm tabulated the results.
The Hub Men's Wear has been in business for over 90 years in Waco, Texas. It
became popular in the 1950's and remained so into the 1970's. Elvis is said
to have shopped there in the 50's.
Mason Yarbrough, a loyal customer said blacks liked to shop at the Hub
because it would usually keep up with the clothing the black community wore.
Entertainers, musicians, gospel singers, and ministers along with Elvis,
were faithful customers to the store.

In 1956, Jerry Lee Lewis (from left), Carl
Perkins, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash got together for an informal jam
session at Sun Records Studio. (Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)
On Dec. 4, 1956, Marilyn Evans entered--and exited--rock 'n' roll history.
That was the day Elvis Presley stopped by Memphis' Sun Studio and recorded
an impromptu session with Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Historians have long believed Evans was there too because she was dating
Presley then and a voice assumed to be hers appears on the recording. Also,
a local newspaper photographer captured an image of the brunet alongside the
famous foursome, which the paper dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet.
"That lovely creature sitting on top of the piano," the caption for the
photo read in the next day's newspaper, is "Marilyn Evans, who dances at the
New Frontier in Las Vegas. She is Elvis' house guest thru Friday." Unlike
some other Elvis exes, Evans didn't make a career out of her companionship
with The King, and Elvis enthusiasts have long wondered what happened to her
after her week in Memphis. Colin Escott, a music historian and co-author of
the play "Million Dollar Quartet," now playing at Chicago's Apollo Theater,
has called her the "the least known of Elvis' girlfriends," which was true.
Until today. Two weeks ago, the Tribune ran a story about the
missing-girlfriend mystery, explaining why the "Million Dollar Quartet" show
features a fictitious Elvis girlfriend, "Dyanne." For 52 years she has
hidden in plain sight, a living, missing link to one of America's most
magical music moments. Here is her story.
When a promoter called Marilyn Evans in summer 1956 and asked her to join
the chorus line at Las Vegas' New Frontier Casino, she could hardly contain
herself--this teenager from Fresno, Calif., lived to dance. "I thought it
was probably the most sophisticated thing that had ever happened in the
whole world," she said last week with an easy laugh.
She came to a Las Vegas in its infancy, a relatively innocent place, where
the dancers enjoyed good pay--$135 a week--sports cars and soirées with such
headliners as Mickey Rooney and George Chakiris. "It was just very exciting:
two shows a night, seven days a week," she said. "I was loving it." Between
shows, the dancers would gather in an employees-only coffee shop within the
casino. It was there that Elvis walked in one night and sat at their table.
"Wow," Evans thought. "He's beautiful--really, truly." Within an hour, Elvis
had slipped Evans a scrawled note on the back of a napkin.
It read: "Can I have a date with you tomorrow night or before I leave?"
Evans nodded in excitement and shock. "He called backstage that night, set a
time," she remembered. And so, for the next couple of weeks she and Elvis
explored Las Vegas, driving around, hanging out and walking through the
casinos. (Neither enjoyed gambling, she said.) Asked why he picked her, she
giggles and shrugs. "I think he probably liked that I wasn't 'out there.' I
was respectable," she said. "I still am respectable, you know!"
And what did this respectable teenager's parents think about her dating
Parental Enemy No. 1 Evans' father had died when she was in high school, but
to head off any trouble she wrote her mother a letter that began, "Don't
flip, mama, but I've become acquainted with Elvis Presley." Momma did flip,
a little; that is, until Evans put the young star on the phone.
"He seems like a very nice person," her mom, L.E. Evans, informed The Fresno
Bee in December 1956, after word of the relationship leaked. "Elvis told
Marilyn he likes her because she doesn't act like a show girl, because she's
real." Like Evans, Elvis too was performing at the New Frontier--his first
Vegas engagement--but when he left, the couple kept in touch by telephone.
Then one day, he called Evans and asked her to come visit and stay at his
Memphis home She said yes. And so, 52 years later, what does she remember
most about the house? "I remember that phone just rang and nobody answered,
which was odd."
In Memphis, Elvis and Evans spent their days riding motorcycles, going out
to eat and watching rented movies at Elvis' house, a luxury the girl from
Fresno could hardly believe. "He was relaxed. He was comfortable there,"
Knowles-Riehl recalled. And at night she slept ..."... not with him." "He
was extremely honorable. He was young; I was young." On Dec. 4, 1956, the
couple, along with some of Elvis' friends, cruised around Memphis, as usual.
But on this day Elvis stopped at Sun, where he had made his first record
only three years prior.
It was there, over the next few hours, that fate (and a tape recorder) would
allow a rare glimpse of the musical passions of these four future legends,
as they jammed on gospel, country and blues. It was a seminal session of
rock 'n' roll's origins ... and one that Knowles-Riehl barely recalls. "I
remember that outfit I was wearing was all wool," she said with a shrug of
apology. "A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then." The fact
that the session meant so little to her might help explain why she said she
felt fine when the relationship faded a few weeks later.
"I always preferred classical music," she explained. "We were just into
different things, not that one's better than the other." "It was great, I
loved it, it was terrifically exciting and wonderful, but I had other things
I wanted to do," said Knowles-Riehl who, the next year, began attending the
University of Utah. Asked why she never broadcast her brush with stardom,
Knowles-Riehl said she never thought it among her life's highlights. Instead
she prefers to gush about her two husbands--her first died--her son and a
dancing career that includes 13 years as the director of the Fresno Ballet.

Elvis & girlfriend Marilyn Evans (right next
to Elvis) November 19, 1956. Also known as the girl sitting on the piano
during the Million Dollar Quartet session.
"It's like people whose high point of their life is their senior prom," she
explained. "My senior prom was good, but a lot of stuff has happened that's
been great since then." Such as ..."When it's not driving me crazy, I enjoy
genealogy," said Knowles-Riehl, who divides her time between Carmel, Calif.,
and Salt Lake City. She also continues to dance--thanks to the fitness of a
40-year-old-- and she runs her own belly dancing troupe.
"It's pretty much the opposite of all my training, but I love it," she said.
Until last week, Knowles-Riehl had never listened to the recording session
from that day in Memphis. But when she did, she quickly nixed the popular
theory that she's the one who requested the song "Farther Along." "That's
not me," she said, as the female voice on the recording speaks with an
obvious drawl.
"I wouldn't pick up a Southern accent that fast," she said, chuckling. And
yet, in listening to the rest of the album from that day's session
Knowles-Riehl stumbled upon another female voice, this one requesting "End
of the Road." "That's me," she said, as her wide brown eyes grew wider. "It's
like otherworldly," she said of hearing herself, "out of body."

With the headphones still on, Knowles-Riehl appeared in that moment as she does in the '56 photograph: Her face bright and blushing, wondering how could it possibly get any better than this.

On Sunday, Joe Moscheo from The Imperials accepted Elvis' star during the
Music City Walk Of Fame induction ceremony at the Country Music Hall of Fame
park in Nashville.

Tace Adkins who also was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame said, " It's a huge honor. I feel quite frankly out of place here, being honored on the same day as Elvis, Little Richard, Randy Travis and Martina McBride. I mean these are people that I've been in awe of, and now I find myself in their company. It's humbling but I'm proud at the same time."

Little Richard said, " I love country music. I never thought that I would
have a star in Nashville. I've had one on Hollywood Boulevard for ages. but
to be in Nashville is a blessing and a lesson. I'm very blessed and very
grateful. I'm glad to be down with my best friend, Elvis. I'm 75 years old
and I'm just glad to be alive at this time."
Joe just sent this photo out and said, " It was a great thrill for me to be
there yesterday."
Joe adds, "Little Richard was so funny!"

Joe is pictured here with Susan Whitaker, TN State Commissioner Of Tourism.
Joe's statement at the unveiling of Elvis' star was, "Thank You from the
Presley family, the estate of Elvis Presley, and from the millions of fans
around the world, thank you for remembering the king of rock and roll and
the greatest entertainer the world will ever know, my friend Elvis Presley!

Larry Geller is working on a new documentary about Elvis, the roots of Elvis
and his impact on fans.
Working title is "Elvis Presley Boulevard", and the targeted premiere date
is August 2009 (Elvis Week, Memphis).
Larry was the special guest at the first Elvis Weekend in Bischofsgrün (Germany),
put together by top collector Markus Henfling. Two hundred fans (= a full 4
star hotel) attended the weekend, which was sold out since July last year.

The Sam Phillips Celebration will take place on January 5th through January
10th,2009. This event is now in it's fourth year. It will be held at the
Marriott Shoals Conferce Center in Florence, Alabama.
Delbert McClinton is the headliner of the event. Delbert represents the
blues era of Sam's career when he produced Howling Wolf, BB King and Ike
Turner. Sam's youngest son Jerry said, "Sam started out recording blues
artists before Elvis or any of the other guys. It's what he liked to do."
Jerry also said McClinton has alot of connections in Florence having
recorded there in the past.
Jason D. Williams will return for his third appearance at the Sam Phillips
event. He is back by popular demand said Jerry. Sonny Burgess and The Pacers
will also honor Sam. Sonny said he wanted to pay tribute to Sam while he was
still around. "Sonny Burgess is an original Sun artist that Sam actually
recorded. Sonny wanted to do the show for a couple of years ." said Jerry
Phillips.
Jerry said the concept behind the celebration remembering his father is to
feature artists that mirror the various genres of music that Sam Phillips
recorded such as Rock n Roll, Blues and Country.
More guests will be announced. Check back for more information soon.

'Elvis Presley's first 1953 Acetate recording of "My Happiness" and "That's
When Your Heartaches Begin" is to be SOLD.
The owner of the Acetate recording would like it to go to a genuine Elvis
fan......if at all possible'.
Yours truly has been invited to help publicise the planned sale.
Those involved prefer to remain anonymous for the time being, till a genuine
level of interest is established.
Obviously the original 1953 recording which Elvis gave to Ed Leek will fetch
quite a sum of money, whether sold at Auction, or privately.
Whatever the monetary value, the very first Elvis Presley recording,
primitive as it may be, is beyond a doubt, a very important and unique part
of popular music history indeed.
It could fetch a million dollars......or even more?
Maurice Colgan.

video download.
THE daughter of rock ‘n’ roll god Elvis Presley is coming to south Essex.
Lisa Marie Presley, 40, is set to join more than 250 Elvis impersonators at
the Battle of the South competition in Corringham next month.
The former wife of pop star Michael Jackson and Elvis’s only daughter will
attend the final show of the contest. It will see tribute acts of the King
fight it out every other Sunday throughout November and December for the
title of “Elvis of the South”.

As recorded live from the mixing desk of the Hilton hotel showroom in Las
Vegas, Nevada, January 26th, 1972 (Opening night).
AUDIONICS 2008-03-2 / 2001
Here is the covert art of the released "THE TALK OF THE TOWN" from the
Audionics & 2001 labels. It is their second release of this special
partnership and this CD will feature the Las Vegas, January 26, 1972 Opening
show as taken directly from first generation DAT copy of original mono
soundboard tape.
This classic concert includes first ever live performances of "Never Been To
Spain", "You Gave Me A Mountain", "Until It's Time For You To Go", "A Big
Hunk O' Love", "An American Trilogy" and "I'll Remember You".
For this reissue, we worked directly from the first generation DAT, and we
were able to make significant audio improvements, compared to original 1997
release. "Audionics / 2001" hope that this special joint-production will
satisfy all those fans who have been asking for a reissue of this essential
concert. This CD is scheduled for late October .
Excerpt from the sleeve note:
"Mid January 1972. Richard Nixon was in the Whitehouse, the anthemic "American
Pie" topped the singles charts and NASA were working hard on Apollo 16, the
penultimate manned Moon mission. Ali was still the Champ, and at cinemas all
over the world people thrilled to the latest James Bond adventure, as Sean
Connery battled the evil mastermind Ernst Stavro Blofeld in "Diamonds Are
Forever". In Las Vegas, America's entertainment and gambling capital, Elvis
was about to hit town for his sixth Vegas season at the Hilton Hotel and to
paraphrase a snippet from a certain 1964 platter, "the whole town was
talking".
'The 37 year old legend is back, Vegas wakes and smiles'
Elvis arrived in Vegas on the eighteenth of January and rehearsals began the
following day. Rumoured song try-outs included Joe Cocker's "Delta Lady" and
the Walker Brothers classic "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore". Neil
Diamond's "Holly Holly" is also rumoured to have been given a test drive.
New songs that did make it into the live set included Marty Robbin's "You
Gave Me A Mountain", as well as "It's Over" and "It's Impossible".
Thankfully an updated arrangement of the fifties classic "Big Hunk Of Love"
also made it to the stage. Along with "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", many fans site 'Hunk'
as the most successful 50s studio to live 70s transition.
Elvis hit the stage running on the 26th January and presented one of the
finest setlists of his career. Luckily, we have the complete show available
on this fantastic CD in remastered sound, and what a treat it is! 'The 37
year old legend is back, Vegas wakes and smiles' gushed Billboard magazine.
Make no mistake, Elvis was flying high in January 1972, and earning the best
reviews of his career."

But, hey, it’s Hellboy”). No idea on when Bubba Nosferatu will start shooting but it’s currently got its eyes on a 2009 release. The follow-up to Bubba Ho-Tep, which Ho-Tep writer-director Don Coscarelli will return to in both roles, is said to follow Elvis while shooting a film in Louisiana when he runs afoul of a coven of she-vampires.
